It's no wonder I found myself in an art career, early on. My drawing started at age three with a lit candle, dripping wax, leaves of evergreen and holly, with a ribbon — mastered with such precision, I could recreate the drawing from memory, years later. I went on to master not only pencil on paper, but ink, oil on canvas, as well as acrylic on canvas and masonite.

GOING PROFESSIONAL
As a teenager, I expanded my talents to include painting — making my first big sale at 19 for $500. Check out one of my early works, "Guadalupe Peak," painted when I was 17 (click the link, Creations, then Fine Art). Early in my career, I took lessons from Art Instruction School, with a 3.6 GPA. Amongst my many freelance jobs, I had several one-man shows of my paintings, including one permanent display at Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles. My experience included fine art, graphics, illustration, and typography (including print advertising, film titles, and scholarly works).

GOING HOLLYWOOD
Perhaps the highlight of my art career was working with the world-renowned Saul Bass (two-time Academy Award winner for title design and a film short; plus corporate identity programs for AT&T, United Airlines, etc). I was privileged to produce several background art pieces for the Ray Bradbury film short, "Quest" (1984, Pyramid Media).

GONE TECHNICAL
Even though I officially left my art career in the early 1990's, art never really left me. I continue to use my sense of design, color, and texture in my web design, and in the creation of intuitive software user interfaces. I am grateful to have been able to combine all of my skills and interests in the design of 3D astronomy programs for Tharsis Highlands Software. I continue to expand my skillset — always the student.
